Port Bolivar Lighthouse, Galveston

Night Light

‘NIGHT LIGHT’

I have always loved this old lighthouse on Port Bolivar. I was born and raised just a few miles from Port Bolivar and through the years, I’m sure I snapped a hundred photos of it because when I was young, we would ride the ferry from Galveston to Port Bolivar quite often just because it was so much fun to ride the ferry. We would go just passed the lighthouse, which is near the ferry landing, then turn around and get back in line for the ride back. It wasn’t until recently that I had the opportunity to photograph it … as a professional photographer. I hopped on the ferry just before sunset and sat on the side of the road until just the right moment to get this shot. Here’s a little history about this beautiful Texas icon.

The Point Bolivar Lighthouse is a historic lighthouse in Port Bolivar, Texas, that was built in 1872. It served for 61 years before being retired in 1933, when its function was replaced by a different light.

During the Galveston Hurricane of 1900, the lighthouse served as a shelter for at least 125 people, saving their lives. It also survived another hurricane, in 1915, where winds of 126 miles per hour were recorded. The first lighthouse keeper, H.C. Claiborne, retired in 1918, after witnessing those two storms, and was replaced by a Captain J. Brooks. In 1947 the lighthouse was sold and, although still standing, is not open to the public.

The 1970 film My Sweet Charlie, starring Patty Duke and Al Freeman Jr. was filmed at the lighthouse and adjacent caretaker’s house. I remember when they were filming that movie as we would ride over there to see if we could catch a glimpse of the actors.

After withstanding over 150 years of erosion, the lighthouse, which was originally black and white,  is now entirely black. This has caused some to call it “The Haunted Lighthouse” of Bolivar.

I got to meet Connie Francis!

Posted on March 29, 2010

For my birthday,my wonderful hubby got us VIP tickets to see Connie Francis perform at the Bob Carr Theatre in Orlando. Her performance was incredible because for a woman of 70, she still has a great voice. Through out the evening, there was a slide show depicting her incredible career from the age of 3. And what a career she has had. And not only did we have fabulous seats three rows from the stage, but we got to meet and talk to her back stage after the show! Wow, my heart was racing as she entered the room as I have always been a great fan of hers and it was a dream come true for me to meet her after all these years. She giggled when I told her that I used to be her when I was a young girl…that I named my Barbie after her and that I would sing all her songs in these little make shift talents shows that my friend and I would put on for our friends in her garage. I was often referred to as “Miss Connie Francis” for quite some time as I was growing up. She gave me her autograph on a portrait that I bought of her…and let us take pictures with her. We weren’t allowed to go behind the table, so we had to lean in to her. But what a gracious and beautiful lady! CF083CF047CF071CF0074CF0083C
